As most people know, cows can shed tears. It is true. So many butchers choose to cover its eyes with a piece of cloth when cutting its throat, in case they both feel sad and the cow hates him. In the place that we are to visit this time, they do exactly the same thing. On Monday, Jan. 22th, a volunteer team of Wuwei Sanctuary Park will go to the abattoir and rescue the cows to be slaughtered. Welcome to join us in the rescue mission.

About The Farmer to Be Visited

On Monday, Jan. 22th, Master Shi Miaowu, accompanied by a group of volunteers, will visit a typical large farm/slaughterhouse, discover the real living circumstances of cows in the industrial farming era, and reveal the true source where table beef comes from. Along with him are also volunteers responsible to record videos and negotiate with the farmers. In this mission, we are hoping to rescue cows, disclose the fact, record the truth and spread knowledge, as well as to talk with the farmers, try to inform them of animal welfare, improve the farm's living condition, promote vegetarianism, and ultimately let more people care about animal lives.

Those beef will be distributed to local retailers, such as supermarkets, malls and bazaars.

According to a report in 2017, 95% of cattle feedlots in China are small-scale (with 1-9 cows). Farms with more than 50 cows are considerably large, including the one that we are going to visit this time, which bred more than 100 cows.

The plant we are going to visit is both for raising and killing beef cattle. A few days ago, our volunteers recorded its slaughter process secretly. But in order to avoid unnecessary social controversy and risk, we will not release the detailed information about every farmer that we visited. And we hope that the public focus not on them, but on what we can do, on influencing more people, and on promoting animal welfare.

Our Poor Friends—Cows

Cows can live 15 to 20 years, even longer than dogs. But somehow the beef calves will come of age and be slaughtered in just 18 week (when they are about four months old). That is like to make a toddler grow up as tall and heavy as an adult in only two years, and to kill him brutally with his mind still immature. Can you imagine in what kind of condition they are forced to fatten up in such a short time? The shady deal in cattle breeding is far more complicated than we think. In this rescue mission we will also go behind the scenes, and keep publishing follow-up reports.

Do you know how much beef and how many cows are consumed in China per year? The answer was 110 tons and 7.44 million in 2017, which means we have eaten 20,000 cows every day in China.

I yearn for freedom.

Cow's Status in Ancient China

However, there was a food taboo called “Niujie”(fasting from beef) in ancient China not very long ago, when most people of Han nationality wouldn't kill yellow or wild oxen for meat, because they were well respected as important farming animals. In Chou Dynasty, not only did the emperors not have beef themselves, but some even banned their subjects from eating it. Besides, from the view of traditional Chinese medical science, beef, which is hot in nature, is not an ideal food supply. Eating beef will upset the balance of human body.

As we read from historical anecdotes, books of Taoism and other literature, this taboo originated between the 9th and 10th century, and was widely accepted by Chinese common value. It was recorded in some morality books and introduced in detail in others. In fact, the prohibition of eating beef derives from the Chinese people's love of animal life and respect for vegetarianism. (such as in Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism). Cows have become human's significant farming assistant because of their hard-working. Moreover, they are as intelligent as any other animals.

How adorable is the little calf!

As a matter of fact, cows have not only strong learning and cognitive ability, but also various emotions and unique personality.

Learning & Cognitive Ability

Cows can learn different things fast, have long-term memory, and are able to deduce the positions of hidden objects as well as to differentiate complicated stimuli and human faces. Both young and grown-up cows can remember the person who have maltreated them, and show fear for him. Cows can also memorize complex spaces and distinguish various kinds of cattle and other creatures.

Emotions

Cows have diverse emotions, including fear and anxiety. The smaller the whites of their eyes are, the happier they feel. Scientists find that when a mother cow is forced to leave her calf, or to be slaughtered, the white parts of her eyes become bigger. Ears are also one of their emotion tellers. They will loosen their ears when relaxed. And just like other animals, cows love playing as well. But when they are in bad mood, they will be less interested in playing.

Our friend Milkshake thinks she's a dog, and likes to lick her hair.

Personality

Just as other animals, every cow is a unique individual and has his own personality. They could be brave, timid, sociable, compliant, bad-tempered and etc.

Despite their larger built and often being served on the table, they are just like our pet cats and dogs, and have the equal rights and ability to love and be loved. If you can give them a chance to survive, they will live a "bullish" life as wonderful and lovable as others.

May all the creatures be treated with kindness.

What Can We Do

We realize that we cannot save all the cows in the world, but at least we have tried our best. Regardless of how much money you have, you can't bring the dead ones to life. So we hope you can join us to cherish life, to protect the cows from suffering, and to let them enjoy the freedom and love they deserve. Therefore, the best way to boycott this brutal business is to start from ourselves and give up animal product. A less bite of meat may spare an animal from death.

We hope to bring you to our sanctuary park sooner.
